Potions Week at Art Camp

This week in art camp, the kids explore potions and recipes for lots of messy fun!

Oh my goodness, this was the most fun calendar week of military camp e'er. Information technology was truly ballsy! Information technology wasn't actually as much of a "magic potions" week (like this day two summers ago which was the messiest fun always), as information technology was a calendar week about recipes and fizzing and mixing and merely manifestly-old sensory messy fun. And some of the things we did were more along the line of learning techniques (like marbling and dying). But every twenty-four hours the children had their easily immersed in something.

This is too a good sneak-superlative into how I construction my days at army camp. I commonly have two or three main projects, and then some "stations" where the kids go when they are done with their main exploration.

Our first day started like this…

BAKING SODA PAINTING

This recipe comes from Learn Play Imagine (click over for total details). It involves mixing baking soda with watercolor to make paint, and and then dropping fiddling bits of vinegar here and in that location and watching it fizz. They did this for an hr!!

This never got old. They only concluded because I told them that I ran out of paper. I detect that it'due south important to put out colors that mix well together. I've said this earlier, but information technology's always worth mentioning.

BEADED Bubble WANDS

I showtime saw these cute wands over at The Artful Parent. We adapted them but slightly by using lollipop sticks instead of dowels. I but love how beautiful they are!!

I honestly can't remember if we used bootleg bubble mix or store bought bubbles. Just let me just say, I accept never made a homemade mix that works besides as shop bought. So but buy the cheap stuff at Target and forget making it! The kids as well fabricated blowers from straws which was equally exciting.

On day 2 nosotros started out with trays of shaving cream…

SHAVING Cream MARBLING

I wrote about this process here, and then click over and y'all can get the supply list and meet some more photos. Let'south but say information technology was very VERY tempting for the kids to stick their hands in the shaving cream. But I told them they couldn't. And so mean. (I did let them at the stop, only if I told them that in the beginning, they would have rushed through their marbling in two minutes flat.)

FIZZING Bath DOUGH

This thought came from the Tried and True blog. Go visit her post to discover out where to get the supplies and how to mix it all together. This 1 was actually, really fun. At that place was so much going on: pouring, squeezing, measuring, mixing, scooping, poking, squeezing, smelling. A project for all of the senses!

I ready out fiddling cards and watercolors on the "station" table and they all fabricated their ain labels. And then they got to take them dwelling house! This would make a swell souvenir, too.

Mean solar day three started out with learning the techniques of Shibori…

SHIBORI Necktie-DYE

I wrote virtually this fantastic day hither. Read the post to find out all of the heady details of how nosotros made these amazing shirts!! This was non difficult, I just actually needed an extra set of hands or two to aid the kids with the rubber bands. And there was definitely some downwards time in betwixt batches, only that's when the kids either helped me stir, ran around the 1000 and played tag, or (for the die-hard artists) went to the station and did some blow painting (go along scrolling downward for that).

After the kids left, my 15yr onetime daughter and I went a piffling basics dying everything white that nosotros could find in the house. A scarf, some pillowcases, napkins. I almost tie-dyed my white jeans! But them my daughter – the phonation of reason in this duo – told me to stop and merely accept a break already. Thank goodness for level-headed teens.

Blow PAINTING

I take been wanting to try this for so long with my campers. I see lots of photos on Pinterest using this technique. I remember it was The Imagination Tree'southward post that first caught my center, but there are so many others. Some accept made the cutest jellyfish or monsters with googly eyes and all!

I thought these turned out then ethereal and interesting. Peculiarly all taped upwardly in a group like this. I wish I could have kept them all!

We just looooved the mode these soap pieces turned out. My kids are withal using them in their bathrooms!

The final day started off with a fizzy bang…

ELEPHANT'S TOOTHPASTE

Have y'all always tried making this elephant's toothpaste? We had never tried it before, and information technology was the coolest trivial experiment ever! Read virtually the ingredients and how to set it upward from Fun at Home with Kids. (Asia likewise has a million other science-meets-art experiments and recipes, so definitely visit her site!)

When the toothpaste stopped flowing, I brought out my collection of quondam lotions, shampoos, and shaving cream, and I let the kids mix and mush and squeeze until their heart's content. Of course they loved information technology! And it was all contained within a tray so the clean upwards was pretty elementary. (I go my plastic trays from Ikea.)

FIZZY FRUIT CONCOCTIONS

We made these on the final day at the finish of the day, just for fun. I set out a fruit platter and some seltzer, and I as well had a pitcher of lemonade handy. The kids just loved pouring and mixing and tasting!
